The Mumbai Police Crime Branch on Tuesday arrested a 30-year-old man residing in Santa Cruz (West) for allegedly staging his son’s kidnapping in order to extract a ransom from his in-laws and to teach his wife a lesson. His wife had earlier walked out on him with their son and went to her parents house.

After being reportedly missing for 58 days,Unit 9 of the Crime Branch traced the three-year-old boy to a location in Malwani on Tuesday, leading to the arrest of his father and an accomplice.

According to the police,on December 26,Naresh Ingle (30),a resident of Indira Nagar on Juhu Tara Road, approached the Santa Cruz police claiming that his son Kalpak had gone missing from near his residence.

“Ingle, who works as a DTP operator at a software firm in Malad, visited the police station daily to know about the progress in the case. He was also seen searching for the boy along his wife, her mother and brother in the locality,” said a Crime Branch officer.

“Following this,Ingle’s wife Swati approached the Santa Cruz police and informed that her husband had received a call from a woman identifying herself as Yashika Singh. The caller claimed that she had information about their son and demanded Rs 5 lakh for the safe return of the boy,” the officer added.

According to Swati,Ingle had been getting multiple calls from Singh, who claimed to be working in the media. Singh made Ingle hear his son’s voice on the phone, following which Ingle convinced her to bring down the ransom amount to Rs 2 lakh,Swati told the police.

The police began parallel investigations in the case and received information that the boy,who appeared to have been kidnapped from elsewhere, had been spotted at a woman’s house in Malad (West). On Tuesday, the police raided the residence and rescued the child. They arrested the woman in the house, who identified herself as Nazia Khan. She told the police that Ingle had handed over the boy over to her.

The police then arrested Ingle. Interrogations revealed that Ingle married Khan in 2005 and had two sons and a daughter with her. He then married Swati in 2008,who left the house after he raised doubts on her character and ill-treated her. She took Kalpak to her parents’ house in Parbhani.

“In October last year, however,Ingle threatened his mother-in-law and brought back his wife and son to Mumbai. In order to get back at his wife and in-laws,he decided to stage his son’s kidnapping and extort some money,” the officer said.
