Malabar Hill: Woman’s statement indicts husband

The Malabar Hill Police on Thursday booked the husband of Noorjahan Sayeed,30,for allegedly attempting to kill her.

The Malabar Hill Police on Thursday booked the husband of Noorjahan Sayeed,30,for allegedly attempting to kill her. Sayyed was rushed to Nair Hospital early on Wednesday with 90 per cent burns allegedly after a quarrel with her husband. While initial inquiries had suggested Sayyed had attempted suicide,the police said she has now alleged that her husband had set her ablaze.

The incident took place in the Shimla Nagar slums in Malabar Hill around 2.50 am on Wednesday. In her statement to the police on Thursday,Sayyed alleged that her husband tried to kill her,the police said.

“She told us that the couple had a fight over their son,Mehtab (9),who had not gone to school that day. Her husband,Gaus Gilani (36),poured kerosene on her and set her ablaze,she has said,” said assistant police inspector Prakash Malve,the investigating officer. Malve said the couple’s children have also told the police that their father had poured kerosene on their mother.

Sayyed stays with her husband,daughters Mehjabeen (11) and Mehrun (9) and two sons. Her husband and three of their children also suffered burns in the incident. “Once discharged from hospital,Gilani will be arrested,” said Malve.
