A major fire broke out in Prabhat Vadi area,behind the Raj Oil Mill on Bellasis Road,in Nagpada on Thursday afternoon. The commercial area,which houses about 10 smallscale industries including embroidery galas,has over 100 labourers working on the premises.
Fire department officials said they received a call around 3.10 pm,after which fire tenders were rushed to the spot. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) disaster control wing was also informed about the fire. The area is very congested. It was a grade-2 fire. Eight fire tenders and six water tankers were rushed to the spot. We started dousing the flames from the north,east and west side and were able to extinguish the flames within an hour, Deputy Chief Fire Officer Anilkumar Patil said.
The fire broke out in a ground-plus-loft structure and there are other constructions nearby. There could have been casualties if it had spread. As of now,no casualties have been reported, said Patil.
Fire officials are still probing the cause of fire. Officers of the Nagpada police station said an accidental fire report would be registered.
