Parts of the island city faced a blackout for over half an hour on Friday after midnight due to a technical glitch causing a disruption in power supply.

Several parts towards the north of the island city such as Sion, Matunga, Mahim, Dadar, Parel, Lower Parel, and Wadala, among others, suffered a power outage between 12 am and 1 am, with each area having faced a blackout for half an hour to 45 mins. The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking is the sole distribution licensee in the island city from Colaba to Mahim and Sion. The agency purchases power from various sources, mainly Tata Power.

Jagdish Patil, general manager at the BEST undertaking, said, “There was some problem from Tata Power’s side. It was perhaps a major cable failure. About 12-13 of our receiving stations were affected because of it.” Patil said that the BEST undertaking coordinated with Tata Power to plug the issue causing the disruption on a war footing.

A Tata Power spokesperson said that a fault had led to the tripping of the Kalwa-Salsette 4 line at 12.10 am, leading to the tripping of associated lines at the Salsette Receiving Station. “Subsequently there was load relief at Dharavi Receiving Station due to operation of overload trimming scheme. All lines feeding Salsette Receiving Station were restored by 12.41 AM. The power supply to affected consumers fed from Dharavi Receiving Stations was restored progressively by 12.50 AM,” the spokesperson added.
