The state government Tuesday constituted a cabinet sub-committee to evolve a comprehensive plan to ensure incidents like the recent stampede at Elphinstone Road station does not occur again. The committee, apart from drawing policies, would also ensure coordination among multiple agencies to fix infrastructure problems at stations in Mumbai and its suburbs.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. The committee will include ministers from both the BJP and the Shiv Sena. The cabinet Tuesday paid tribute to the 23 people who lost their lives in the stampede last week. Before the cabinet meeting began, Sena ministers met the CM to convey their concerns over the stampede. They demanded wider foot overbridges and removal of hawkers from all bridges and railway stations.
“The ministries of urban development, transport and finance will have to work closely with other civic and independent authorities to tackle the problems,” said an official. ENS
