The Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has proposed a cleanliness drive in Maharashtra through the 18 Universities and 4,500 colleges on the lines of Narendra Modi’s “swachh bharat abhiyan”. The cleanliness campaign titled MUNIJAN (Maharashtra Universities New initiative for Joint Action Now) is based on the success mantra –simple, implementable, measurable and sustainable.
State government wants to tag the cleanliness drive with a strong social message of “Clean Maharashtra, Safe Maharashtra and Healthy Maharashtra”. The CM concept note emphasises on significance of Maharashtra taking the lead in the movement and setting the examples for others across country. While the government has left it to the respective Universities to work out its implementation the campaign will be carried out every year between August 15 to January 29 till 2019.
Maharashtra which wants to become the front runner in the movement has recommended the setting up a committee chaired by the pro- Vice Chancellor. The multi-tiered committee will have a local body which would work at district level, oversee the institutes at university
levels and a state government level which would monitor the work across Maharashtra.
In the concept note which the chief minister would present on Thursday to the officials and Vice Chancellors across the University states, “As one of the most development states of India, Maharashtra should be front runner in this campaign. It has 18 Universities and 4,500
colleges with yearly turnout of more than 5,00,000 graduates.”
Fadnavis in the note states, “ We intend to use this human potential for the new cleanliness movement.” It further addes, “While citing that the state has its own “Sant Gadgebaba Swachata abhiyan, which focuses on rural cleanliness, our proposed movement will create a similar campaign for urban, semi-urban and rural areas where these colleges are located.”
MUNIJAN which will be launched across Universities will also symcronise with the ongoing Gadgebaba Swachha Abhiyan in rural areas. The purpose of taking the drive to the colleges and Universities is to inculcate amongst the students bot awareness and also a forum to deliver something back to the society.
Every college will be obliged to adopt a public place like post-office, government hospital, public offices, railway stations, bus stands, public park etc. Expertise and resources from other government agencies would be used and hospital and medical institutes will be roped to provide information on how to curtail malaria and dengue.
The nine objectives listed in the cleanliness drives are as follows: The movement aims to be a part of the “Clean India” of 2019 envisaged
through “Swachh Bharat Abhiyan”. Active participation of students of 4,500 colleges Inculcating values like cleanliness, teamwork,
patriotism in students, making them a stakeholder in “Clean India” campaign. Clean public places to make surrounding more habitable and
hygienic. Involve local Ngos, local communities and government authorities to achieve maximum benefit out of limited resources.
Creating an awareness and sensitisation among students and society at large. Inculcating the value of participatory developmental process
for hygiene, cleanliness and sanitation. Eliminating the causation agents of dengue, malaria etc.
