Suresh Bijlani, one of the main accused in the murder of builder S K Lohariya, surrendered before Thane sessions court Monday, five months after Lohariya was shot outside his office in Navi Mumbai.

Bijlani,a prominent builder in Navi Mumbai, was remanded in Mumbai Police Crime Branch’s custody for a day.

Lohariya was allegedly shot by hired guns Venkatesh Shettiar and Wajid Qureshi in Vashi on the morning of February 16. Shettiar was caught by eyewitnesses and handed over to the police, while Qureshi was arrested from his Mumbra residence a day later. The Navi Mumbai police arrested former policeman and encounter specialist Emmanuel Amolik before the case was handed over to the Mumbai Police Crime Branch. The Crime Branch then arrested Altaf Khan,Naseer Ansari,Kailash Gomane,Rajeev Chauri alias Frances and businessman Sumit Bachchewar in the case.

Police said that Bijlani, whose anticipatory bail application had recently been rejected by the Supreme Court, presented himself at the court around 11.30 am with his lawyer, and was first remanded in judicial custody. His lawyer then moved for bail, which was rejected by the court.

“As soon as he was taken to Thane Civil Hospital for medical tests,Bijlani complained of chest pains and had to be admitted. He stayed there for a few hours but was discharged by evening,” said a Crime Branch officer.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Crime) Niket Kaushik said,“We have received Bijlani’s custody till tomorrow, during which time we are to produce him in a local court to seek additional custody.”

The Crime Branch will now interrogate Bijlani regarding the conspiracy that was allegedly hatched with Bachchewar,Anurag Garg,Bhupesh Gupta and S P Agarwal.

Meanwhile,Lohariya’s son Sandeep dismissed the surrender as a farce. “Bijlani has manipulated the order in his favour by checking into a hospital. What kind of a surrender is this? I am going to mention this in the hearing of a Special Leave Petition I have filed.”
