On Sunday evening, the girl,a resident of Baiganwadi in Govandi, had gone out with her grandmother to fill water at a nearby common tap when a stranger allegedly kidnapped her on the pretext of talking to her grandmother. The next day,the girl was found roaming near her house with injury marks on her body.

The girl has been admitted to the JJ Hospital for treatment.

A day after the incident fear and panic spread across Shivaji Nagar area and Govandi,as locals feared a repeat of kidnappings and rapes of minor girls as it had happened in Nehru Nagar in February 2010.

Local residents said if a stranger could kidnap the girl in front of her grandmother, their children who went to school and played alone were not safe. They said they would begin patrolling in their respective areas to keep their locality safe.

“We will start to patrol the area like locals of Cuffe Parade are doing after the kidnapping and murder of a minor girl there,” said Santosh Shrivastav,a local of Shivaji Nagar.

Meanwhile, police officers investigating the case have not yet been able to prepare the sketch of the suspected kidnapper,as the grandmother of the girl, who is the prime witness,is unable to describe the stranger.

“We will detain suspects who match the sketch we prepare, and conduct a DNA test on each as the Nehru Nagar police had done in the cases in their area,” said Quaiser Khalid,Additional Commissioner of Police,(East Region).

In February 2010,three girls were found murdered in the area, and the police had arrested one person in connection with the third murder. The first two murders, however, still remain unsolved.
