A DEPUTY engineer with the Kalyan Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC) allegedly committed suicide by hanging himself at his Kalyan residence around 12.30 am Tuesday. While no suicide note was found, the police have learnt that Dattatray Mastud, 46, was suffering from a serious ailment. They are verifying this. Mastud had incidentally been arrested last year on bribery charges after the Thane Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) laid a trap on the basis of a complaint filed by a local shopowner.

Senior inspector of Khadakpada police station Gulabrao Gore said Mastud reportedly hanged himself from the ceiling fan of his bedroom at his Khadakpada residence around 12.30 am Tuesday. His wife and son were in the adjacent room. “We have heard that he was suffering from throat cancer and verifying the same from his hospital records. No suicide note was found,” Gore said.

The ACB had arrested Mastud last year, along with a corporator and a peon, for allegedly accepting Rs 8 lakh from a Kalyan-based shopowner. The three had allegedly asked the shopowner to pay the amount if he wanted to prevent his shop suspected to be illegal from being demolished. The complainant had then approached the ACB, which laid a trap and arrested the trio.

The ACB had found that Mastud owned eight flats in Pune, Navi Mumbai, Dombivli and Kalyan.
