A man from Karnataka was arrested by the railway police last week for stealing Rs 3.65 lakh from a train passenger at CSMT. The theft took place on September 26 when Sheela Pillai (56) was travelling to Chennai. Samadhan Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Railways), said just as the train in which Pillai was travelling began to move, a man grabbed her purse that had cash, two cellphones and gold jewellery worth Rs 3.65 lakh.

Pawar said after analysing CCTV footage from the station, they identified a man, who their informers said, was known as Circuit. The police later identified the man as Sharnappa Valekar, a native of Gulbarga district in Karnataka. Last week, the police caught Valekar at Gulbarga railway station. The police said Rs 2.13 lakh worth of stolen goods have been recovered from him. Valekar has been arrested and booked with theft.
