HSBC Bank employee Sunny Pillai (23) of Matunga allegedly tried to commit suicide by consuming an insecticide at Mahim Police Station Thursday night. Pillai had been reportedly summoned for counselling after his wife accused him of harassment.

He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital and is said to be stable. Police said Pillai was embroiled in divorce proceedings.

“His wife complained to Mahim Police recently that he was harassing her even as divorce proceedings were on. We called him to the police station Thursday night. He had a bottle of insecticide concealed which he consumed,” said DCP (zone 5) Dhananjay Kulkarni.

“We have booked him for attempted suicide under IPC section 309,” he said. Police said Pillai had attempted suicide twice before, once by consuming 14 sleeping pills and on another occasion by trying to stab himself.

“Pillai had an inter-caste love marriage a year ago that turned sour and his wife recently started staying with her parents in Mahim. Pillai kept trying to meet her and was pestering her to withdraw divorce proceedings. She had already registered two non-coginisable cases against him. When we received a third two days ago,we decided to counsel the couple,” said a Mahim police officer.
