The Bombay High Court on Friday asked Homeless Collective,a city organisation,to provide a list of possible night shelters with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) to the court.
Homeless Collective has filed a public interest litigation demanding that the civic and state authorities should identify homeless persons and ensure adequate night shelters for them.
Its lawyer Kranti L C claimed at the hearing on Friday that the BMC owns several structures that can be used as night shelters, especially during the monsoon, but is not doing so.
The court then asked him to provide a list of such structures. The petitioner has cited a few SC verdicts that mandate authorities to provide night shelters on a ratio of one shelter per one lakh people.
It claimed that the state government has consistently disregarded and failed to implement the orders.
The PIL has been adjourned till Tuesday.
