On Tuesday,it was neither a technical snag nor a signal failure that led to a 40-minute delay on the Western Railway’s suburban section amid the morning rush. The motorman and guard of a train did not report for duty on time as they were asleep in the motormen’s lobby at Virar station, senior WR officials said.

The incident delayed the next six trains, too. The administration has suspended a box boy,who was supposed to wake up the guard and motorman on time, for negligence.

Sources said the Bandra-bound train,72 A,was slated to leave Virar station at 5.30 am but it could not depart even at 5.45 am. As per railway rules,it is the duty of the box boy,who carries the box of the guard,to wake up the motorman and guard for early morning duty. Sources said the box boy was himself asleep.
