A 33-year-old Goa-based man was found hanging from a pipe at an isolated spot near the international airport at Andheri East on Sunday morning.

The man identified as Manuel Periera had landed from Dubai at 5 am on Sunday is suspected to have been heading towards the domestic airport to board a flight for Goa.

According to the Sahar airport police officers,Pereira was found hanging with a nylon rope from a pipe near a drain. Residents called the police at 7 am and informed that an unidentified man had committed suicide.

On searching the man,the police found his passport in his shirt pocket. However,Pereira’s luggage was missing.

The police officers from the Sahar Airport police station said prima facie it appeared that the man had committed suicide. The police sent the body for post-mortem examination to the nearby Cooper Hospital. According to the police, the man landed in Mumbai from Dubai at 5 am from an Air India flight and is a resident of Margao in Goa.

The police have at present registered a case of suicide. However, they have not ruled out the possibility of murder as Pereira’s luggage was missing from the crime spot.

PSI G Bhusare from the Sahar Airport police station said they have asked the airport authorities to hand over the CCTV grabs of the airport at the time Pereira’s flight landed.

“We will check Pereira’s movements to see whether he was accompanied by someone or had met somebody at the airport who could be a suspect or whether he had booked a taxi,” said Bhusare.

The police officers also suspect that on his way towards the domestic airport,he might have been cornered by drug addicts or robbers in the locality with an intention to loot him and after killing him his assailants might have hanged him.

“We are investigating the case and as the reason for Pereira’s suicide is not clear,we are not ruling out the possibility of robbery and murder,” said Bhusare.

The police have informed Pereira’s family in Goa,which is on its way to Mumbai.

The police officers said his family will be able to tell them if he was depressed or was carrying any luggage at all.
