Her store Bungalow 8 is already known for its eclectic mix of designs but owner and creative director Maithili Ahluwalia is not one to take her work lightly. The entrepreneur has just kicked off Glocal 2012,a series of 12 pop-ups at her Colaba store. Separated by a gap of eight weeks, each of these pop-ups will cover different design disciplines but with one common ethos: that of creating locally while thinking globally. I wanted to create a platform for international designers who give a modern spin to their cultural traditions, she explains. The first pop-up in this series is by Lebanese accessory designer Dareen Hakim, whose collection of finely crafted leather handbags will be on offer till July 21.
Hakim says that she has used rustic Arabic metal inscriptions on modern delicate leather. My bags represent the contrast in Lebanons mix of ancient history and modern luxury. In fact, they have been embraced by many Indians in the United States due to their Eastern aesthetic and their suitability to Indian attire, says the New York-based designer, who also boasts of clients such as Eva Longoria and Fergie.
