Gastroenteritis cases on the rise: Health dept

This monsoon,as many as 2,995 cases of gastroenteritis have been recorded,according to data received from the civic health department. The number os cases recorded since August 7 is 260 against the 214 cases recorded in the first week of the month.

Dr Mangala gomare,deputy executive health officer in BMC,said one way to avoid contracting this disease is to maintain a high level of hygiene.

“While cases of malaria have reduced this year,gastroenteritis cases have drastically gone up. In Sion hospital,every week 40-48 cases of gastroenteritis are being reported,” said Dr Avinash Supe,Dean of Sion hospital.

While last year’s July records show 1,592 cases of gastroenteritis,in this year,July alone has recorded 2,481 cases.

Supe said boiled or filtered drinking water is must as a precautionary measure.”One must also avoid eating stale food in this season,” he said.
