Ahmednagar police had arrested the four and registered an offence against them at the Jamkhed police station. The four were at the police lock up located within the Tehsil office premises, close to Jamkhed police station, when they escaped.
On Friday, five constables Appa Divte, Rahul Shelke, Gahininath Yadav, Sana Sayyad and Shamsundar Yadav were deployed at the lock up.
After heavy rain in Jamkhed on Friday afternoon, there were power cuts in the area. Power was restored only in the early hours of Saturday.
Taking advantage of the darkness, the dacoits escaped through the roof. Police said they seem to have made a human pyramid. One of them reached the roof to remove the tiles and the supporting wooden beams. He managed to crawl out. He is suspected to have helped his aides to climb out using a blanket. They are believed to have jumped down the roof and fled.
None of the policemen on duty saw the dacoits flee, and came to know about the escape only after electricity was restored. On learning about the incident, senior police officers visited the spot.
Minister of State for Home Ram Shinde who hails from Jamkhed said the incident had brought shame for the police department.
He said he has ordered the Ahmednagar police to conduct an inquiry and submit a report immediately. Three teams of Ahmednagar police were searching for the dacoits.
