R Madhavan is all over Bollywood with as many as six films this year

You do one or two Hindi films a year and you are not seen at parties as most actors are. Why are you such a recluse?
I’m not social,I don’t like partying. I hardly have a night life and I have signed very few Hindi films over the years. I have signed films that I would want to watch or I would enjoy working on. But this year will see a complete turnaround. I have as many as six releases this year that include,13B,Sikandar,Teen Patti,Sunglass and 3 Idiots.

Does that mean you are moving base to Mumbai soon?
I moved here three months ago. I have bought a house in Kandivali and live there with my wife, son and two dogs. As I was doing more Bollywood projects,it was wiser to shift to Mumbai.

Apart from Alaipayuthey and Rehna Hai Tere Dil Main you haven’t played the quintessential lover boy. Then why are you always called one?
I honestly don’t know. I came into the industry with Banegi Apni Baat where I played a lover boy. Probably that perception has remained. If Shah Rukh Khan can be called a lover boy at 43,then I shouldn’t complain.

You are also known as the Tom Cruise of South India.
In Chennai, people compare me to every actor who plays a lover boy. But honestly,I would like to be called ‘Maddy’ of India.

Your next release 13B is a horror flick and the genre is working well these days.
Some are saying horror isn’t doing that well, and a few others say it is the most sought-after genre. But I don’t want to seal my film’s destiny depending on the market condition. The film will work because it is a good story and it is a plot that has not been explored in Bollywood earlier.

Are you superstitious?
If I was I wouldn’t name my film 13B.

All spooky films made in the past have got their directors and crew experiencing some strange experiences whilst shooting for the same.
We did experience a lot of eerie moments during the making. Every time we were shooting at 1300 hours,or 1 pm,something would go wrong—either the film magazine got stuck or a tile fell off the roof. After a while,we stopped shooting for that hour. The worst experience during the making was when Chennai was flooded on November 13,2008,that too after quarrelling with Karnataka for water, for so many years. 13B is bilingual film (Hindi and Tamil)—did that take longer to shoot?
It took us just 48 days to film both versions, although the cast was different. Neetu Chandra and I are the only common actors in both movies.

After the success of Guru and Rang De Basanti, why did you choose to do small budget films like Mumbai Meri Jaan and 13B?
I did Mumbai Meri Jaan for its director Nishikant Kamat, who is a dear friend. With 13B I am re-launching myself as a solo lead and right now I can afford a budget of only Rs 13- to Rs 14 crore.

You started off pretty late (at 29) as an actor. Have you managed to catch up?
There’s a long way to go. I am just a beginner.
