Five cops,woman S-I injured in skirmish

Vanrai police said the woman S-I suffered eye injuries.

Vanrai police station witnessed dramatic scenes Monday after relatives of a theft suspect,who died in police custody Saturday,gathered outside the police station,alleging that Manoj Salve,22,had died due to police torture.

Police had to resort to lathicharge to control 30-40 people,including women,who began ransacking the police station premises. In the scuffle,six police officers,including a senior inspector,the assistant police commissioner of the area and a woman sub-inspector,were injured. Vanrai police said the woman S-I suffered eye injuries.

“The crowd assaulted police personnel with sticks,” said Uttam Khairmode,assistant commissioner of police of the area. The police have arrested 15 persons for rioting and assault.

Salve and Prakash Chavan,23,were caught by security guards at Nesco Exhibition Ground in Goregaon (East) while allegedly trying to steal valuables from visitors at an exhibition. They were taken to Vanrai police station for questioning them before placing them under arrest. Salve complained of uneasiness and was taken to a hospital,where he was declared dead before admission. Police are treating the case as a custodial death.
