Tarun Tahiliani kick-started the Bridal Fashion Week with a celebration of couture.

On his last visit to the city during the bridal exposition a month ago,Tarun Tahiliani had emphasised that his opening show at the Aamby Valley India Bridal Fashion Week 2012 would be a lavish celebration of couture. On Wednesday evening,at the Grand Hyatt grounds in Santacruz,Tahiliani kept his promise. The U-shaped 70-feet ramp swathed in foliage, and was reminiscent of the Garden of Eden. The show that started an hour late, had model Ankita Shorey open it in an ornate red-and-gold lehenga-choli. Her walk was accompanied by the high-pitched notes of singer Sonam Kalra, who belted out a folk song for the first segment. While the song element was a bit of a surprise, the clothes — beautiful as they were — were typical of Tahiliani. Net saris,lehenga-cholis and anarkalis for women; sherwanis, bandhgalas and dhotis for men,the models displayed a bright array of bridal finery, totalling up to 41 outfits. Tahiliani also played it safe with colours. He started out with the red palate and then progressed to orange, pink and maroon.

The second segment showcased a different colour palette with creams, greens and dull gold dominating the line. Also, velvet, crystal, lace and brocade were featured prominently here, alongside shararas with kurtis and Tahiliani’s signature sari gowns. The final segment saw the use of ivory, beige and pink hues in lehenga cholis and gowns. The pick of the lot was the ivory net lehenga worn by showstopper Chitrangada Singh. With a matching choli and dupatta, the attire stood out with its generous use of crystals and sequins. The collection did not have any breakthrough creations, but it showcased the designer’s mastery over couture yet again.
