AN employee of a gold dealer was allegedly robbed by two fake cops in Masjid Bunder Monday evening.

Pydhonie police said Gopalsingh Dasana (21),who works for a businessman in Dombivali, exited Zaveri Bazaar with gold bars worth Rs 6.9 lakh.

He was on his way to Masjid railway station when two men in khakhi allegedly accosted him.

“They asked Dasana to open his bag and after seeing gold, took it away. They told him to meet them at the Masjid beat chowky. Dasana tried to get them to talk to his employer, but they said they had already spoken to him and that he should report to the chowky immediately. The men also took his cell phone and were gone before he could argue further,” said inspector P Chavan.

Dasana went to the chowky, only to discover that no cop with a bag came there, nor were there any instructions for him to report there. He then rushed to Pydhonie police station and registered a complaint.

“We showed Dasana photographs of several history-sheeters who are known to commit such crimes but he said none of them robbed him. His cell phone is switched off. Sketches of the accused are being prepared,” Chavan said.

Police said people such as Dasana, who regularly carry gold and other valuables, were a favourite target of fake cops who hang around Zaveri Bazaar.
