A SLIP by an accused helped police crack the case of kidnapping and murder of Aditya, son of diamond broker Jitendra Ranka. Vijesh Sanghvi killed the 13-year-old and disposed of the body but left his footwear in the car used for the crime.
The alleged main conspirator Himanshu Ranka (25),cousin of Aditya, and his friend Vijesh (28) were arrested Tuesday. While Himanshu accompanied Jitendra (48) to lodge a police complaint,Vijesh reached the police station late Monday night after killing Aditya to show support.
When Sanghvi reached the police station in his Honda City,Jitendra looked inside the car and was shocked to find sandals of Aditya. When Sanghvi could not provide a satisfactory explanation,Jitendra brought the matter to our notice, said DCP Nisar Tamboli, zone II.
Police searched the car and found blood in its boot. Sanghvi was immediately detained and so was Himanshu. They soon confessed and were arrested. A police team then took them to Pali village in Raigad to recover the body.
Himanshu and Sanghvi had incurred debts running into lakhs due to cricket betting. To pay off the debts,Himanshu suggested they kidnap Aditya. While he remained in the background,Vijesh executed the kidnapping and called Jitendra for a Rs 30-lakh ransom. However,Aditya tried to escape and was stabbed to death, said an officer with VP Road police.
Police said Sanghvi drove 45 km looking for a secluded spot to dump the body. He stopped near Shivkar village,5 km from Mumbai-Pune expressway at Kalamboli.
Sanghvi burnt the body and dumped it in grass near a tree. The spot is barely five feet from the fence of the road. Since the grass is not high the body was visible, said Datta Patil, senior inspector,Panvel police station.
Sanghvi showed the spot to police at 6.46 pm Tuesday. The body was badly burnt. We could make out the face but clothes and a wrist watch were completely burnt. The body has been taken to JJ Hospital for post-mortem, Patil said.
