The Tardeo police have arrested a man who allegedly climbed a drainage pipe to his former employers fifth-storey apartment and made away with jewellery worth Rs 23 lakh.

According to the Tardeo police,the burglary occurred on December 4 at the residence of Kumd Modi (80),who stays in the Lotus Society behind the Antilla building in Kemps Corner. The police said that Modi took sleeping pills and was sound asleep when the man climbed up the drainage pipe and broke into the apartment through a window. The burglar then broke open the lock of a cupboard in Modis flat and decamped with gold and diamond jewellery worth Rs 23 lakh.
The suspect was caught on a Closed Circuit Television (CCTV) camera mounted on the exterior of the building. He was wearing a mask. However,the camera caught a tattoo on his right forearm. We showed the footage to the victim and she recalled seeing the same tattoo on the right forearm of her former domestic help Tara Shankar alias Munna,who had quit working for her around a year ago, said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Dhananjay Kulkarni.
After further investigation,police found out that Munna was staying in the Kasturba Nagar locality in Chembur,from where he was arrested on Monday. Jewellery worth Rs 6 lakh was recovered from him.
During interrogation,he revealed that his friend Deepak Jena,who kept a watch outside the building during their break-in,had gone to Orissa with the rest of the booty. Jena was picked up from Balasore in Orissa and brought to Mumbai on Thursday.
The rest of the booty was also recovered from him,the police said.
