Employees of a courier firm in Fafalwadi, near the Cotton Exchange in south Mumbais Bhuleshwar area,on Thursday thwarted a robbery attempt and nabbed one of the suspects. The suspect, identified as Mohammad Kasim (23),was handed over to the police.
The police have seized two firearms and five live rounds from Kasim. While Kasim has been arrested and booked for his role in the crime, four of his accomplices remain at large. Officers investigating the case said the faces of all the suspects were captured on seven CCTV cameras installed in the surrounding areas. Teams have been formed to nab the accused.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone 2) Anil Kumbhare said the incident occurred at the office of Patel Rameshkumar Kantilal Angadia around 2.30 pm on Thursday. Five persons came to the office. They had a chopper and firearms, and told employees to hand over all the money to them. They also assaulted one of the employees. The stunned employees obliged and filled a bag with Rs 3 lakh, which was then handed over to the five men, said Kumbhare. While the suspects were making their way outside the office, one of the employees shouted for help. This alerted people working in other firms nearby and Tilak Thappa,an employee of another company, pounced on Kasim. Kasim fired a round. However, the bullet hit a water storage tank. Taking advantage of the situation, the employees of the firm and others from the nearby office pounced on Kasim. They nabbed him, while the four others escaped leaving the bag behind, said Kumbhare.
Kasim was then allegedly thrashed by the employees before they informed the police. He was handed over to the L T Marg policeand taken to G T Hospital for treatment. He was arrested late on Tuesday.
Senior police inspector Avinash Sonawane said Kasim has been booked under Sections 452 (trespassing after preparation for hurting),392 (robbery),395 (dacoity),397 (dacoity with intent to cause death or hurt),34 (common intent) of the Indian Penal Code, and various sections of the Arms Act.
A search is on for his accomplices, said Sonawane.
Kasim hails from Uttar Pradesh, the police said. He had come to the city on April 30. We are probing the case to see if he had come just to commit the robbery, said Kumbhare.
