A day after the Maharashtra cabinet chalked out a special compensation package worth Rs 4,000 crore for those affected by recent hailstorms and unseasonal rains in the state, the Election Commission of India Thursday gave its approval to the package.

With Lok Sabha elections drawing near, the government is trying to expedite the disbursal of relief. At least 37 deaths have been reported after the calamity struck the state.

Owing to the model code of conduct, the state government had to seek the EC’s permission to extend the enhanced relief, over and above the Centre’s standing orders as per NDRF norms. Chief Secretary J S Saharia said the state wrote to the EC on Wednesday night and the approval was granted on Thursday evening. Principal Secretary (Relief and Rehabilitation) Milind Mhaiskar said relief up to Rs 600 crore would be released by the state within the next eight days.
