THE FUNERAL procession of a community leader led to a major traffic jam on the Eastern Express Highway Monday afternoon.

Several followers of Babasaheb Gopale, a noted Matang community leader who passed away Monday, had assembled for the funeral procession around 3.30pm near the Suman Nagar junction area of Chembur.

Several motorists were stuck in traffic, which extended up to a few kilometres.

Motorists said the procession was progressing at a slow pace and reached Sion hospital around 5.30 pm. Many of them took to Twitter to alert others to avoid the freeway.

The Mumbai Police Twitter handle also received several complaints about the highway facing bumper-to-bumper traffic.
