Detained after accident,2 confess to murder & robbery

Two men who were detained from the site of an autorickshaw accident turned out to be involved in a series of crimes spanning three police stations in Thane,including a case of murder and robbery.

Two men who were detained from the site of an autorickshaw accident turned out to be involved in a series of crimes spanning three police stations in Thane,including a case of murder and robbery.

Police sources said an autorickshaw overturned on Gandhare Bridge in Kalyan on May 31. A crowd gathered,attracting the attention of two patrolling policeman. The two occupants of the auto ran when they saw the cops approach. The crowd and the policemen chased and nabbed the two,identified as Mohammed Ali Sheikh (22) and Sayyed Rizvi (23). They were taken to Mahatma Phule station for questioning.

“The duo could not answer simple questions such as who the autorickshaw belonged to and where they were going. We arrested them and began a probe into whether they had stolen the auto,” said an officer.

After days of questioning,Sheikh and Rizvi made a confession,prompting the police to contact Bazarpeth police in Kalyan,as well as the Bhiwandi and Kongaon police stations for verification.

Senior inspector R R Patil of Bazarpeth police station said,“On the evening of May 31,Vinay Kumar,the owner of the auto,called the two and told them he had picked up two migrants from Uttar Pradesh who would make easy targets for a robbery and was taking them to Bhiwandi. Sheikh and Rizvi intercepted the auto in Bhiwandi,in Kongaon police’s jurisdiction,robbed the migrants and fled to Kalyan. On the way,they had an argument with Vinay over dividing the stolen goods. They hit him on the head with an iron rod,killing him and dumped the body in Ganesh Ghat. They were fleeing when the auto overturned.”

Patil said the two victims of the robbery,Mahesh Mandal and Puran Mandal,had been traced. They had filed a complaint with Kongaon police. Also,Vinay’s brother Mohan Kumar had filed a missing person’s complaint with the Bhiwandi City police.
