MUMBAI Police Crime Branch Monday cracked the murder of an octroi agent who was found dead in Dahisar earlier this month. The accused,a work acquaintance of the victim, has claimed he committed the crime as he needed money for his sisters forthcoming wedding.
Mohan Mishra,21,was arrested after he confessed to conspiring and murdering fellow octroi agent Lavkesh Upadhyay,24,on April 9,police said.
The body was found the next day in a forest area near Dahisar Check Naka. Two beer bottles and a bottle of whiskey were also found nearby. Dahisar police had registered a murder case against unidentified persons and the Crime Branch had launched a parallel probe.
Some of the people who had gathered around the body identified the deceased. Inquiries revealed that Mohan Mishra,21,also an octroi agent, had been asking several of his acquaintances for a loan some days before, but had not been successful. We decided to question him, said Ambadas Pote,Deputy Commissioner of Police,Detection (I),(Crime Branch).
Mishra was picked up for questioning on April 19 and reportedly confessed. Mishra said he needed around Rs1 lakh for his sisters upcoming wedding in Bihar and was trying to borrow money from friends. He had seen Upadhyay sport jewellery, such as chains, bracelets and rings made of gold and silver. He then hatched the plan to kill and rob Upadhyay along with his friend Anshul Mishra (24),who is wanted in the case, Pote said.
Mishra then started gathering information about Upadhyay, who he had met several times at work. On learning that Upadhyay was fond of beer,he invited the latter for a drink and later killed Upadhyay and fled with his jewellery, police said. Mishra was handed over to Dahisar police.
