Crime against women: Capital city leads state

State capital Mumbai recorded 10.35 per cent of all crimes committed against women that were reported from Maharashtra in 2012

State capital Mumbai recorded 10.35 per cent of all crimes committed against women that were reported from Maharashtra in 2012,figures released by the police on Monday revealed.

Of the 17,800 cases of crime against women recorded in the state,Mumbai accounted for 1,843,while Ahmednagar was ranked second with 932 cases (5.24 per cent) and Navi Mumbai was third on the list with 824 incidents (4.63 per cent).

Mumbai also recorded a state-high 232 incidents of rape in 2012. As many as 107 rape cases were registered in Thane and 36 in Navi Mumbai.

Of 1,839 cases of rape registered in the state in 2012,924 of the total 1,845 victims were aged below 18 years.

In the city,of the 233 rape victims,142 were minors,including 105 aged between 14 and 18 years. Adult women comprised 93 of the total victims in Mumbai,with 75 in the 18-30 age bracket.

Mumbai also has the dubious distinction of leading the state in the total number of cases of kidnapping and abduction of women with 141 cases (12.4 per cent). As many as 77 incidents were recorded from Thane and 11 from Navi Mumbai. Mumbai and Pune also top the list of sexual harassment cases,with 235 recorded in Mumbai and 85 in Thane. With 614 cases,Mumbai also recorded the maximum incidents of molestation,accounting for 10.6 per cent of the state total. Thane witnessed 203 cases (9.1 per cent),the second highest tally in the state.

Mumbai leads the state in the number of human trafficking offences. As many as 160 were registered in the city under the Immoral Trafficking (prevention) Act,accounting for 43.7 per cent of the state total.
