CR staffer held for extortion attempt

A CR employee was arrested by the Government Railway Police at Kurla for allegedly trying to extort money from commuters aboard a CST-bound local on Monday.

A CR employee was arrested by the Government Railway Police at Kurla for allegedly trying to extort money from commuters aboard a CST-bound local on Monday.

Afzal Kadar Khan (21),who works as a pointsman in railway yard,allegedly posed as a ticket checker and tried to penalise commuters travelling in an unauthorised manner in the handicapped compartment. His alleged accomplice Mahesh Rahate fled before being caught.

Shivaji Dhumal,senior police inspector,Kurla GRP,said: “Khan tried to extort money from passengers by posing as a ticket checker. We are on the lookout for his aide.”

The two boarded the train from Thane railway station around 1 pm on Monday. Using his railway identity card,Khan and Rahate demanded Rs 1,000 as fine from college student Ashok Mohan Pawar (20) and his friend,among others. Khan then allegedly tried to persuade commuters to pay Rs 200 each to avoid being taken to the senior ticket checking staff.

An alert passenger,however,questioned his credentials. In an ensuing brawl,Khan allegedly hit a passenger. Commuters handed him over to cops at Ghatkopar station.
