The police officials escorting five undertrials, who had escaped from a police van in Vasai, have come under scanner. According to the sources, these policemen may soon face a departmental enquiry.

Five dacoits booked under the MCOCA escaped from a police van after assaulting nine constables on their way back from a Vasai court on Saturday evening. The source said,“It’s surprising that how a bunch of hardened criminals who were handcuffed managed to assault the constables and then escape.”

According to the Thane Rural Police, the dacoits, who were arrested in 2007 for a spate of robberies, were charged under various sections of MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organized Crime Act).

“The men started to fight with each other and when our guards tried to intervene they assaulted them. According to the rules, only one guard was armed with a carbine. The number of carbines provided to the guards is in accordance with the number of prisoners being transported. Thus the prisoners attacked the constable with a carbine before overpowering others. Hearing the commotion, the driver stopped the vehicle when the five jumped off the van and vanished into the forest,” said Additional Superintendent of Police (Thane Rural) Shashikant Mahavarkar.

Mahavarkar added,“Acting on the information that the dacoits are holed up in jungles of Vasai,we have launched a man hunt and should capture them soon. The accused have been identified as Gamru Buria,Mukesh Buria,Fakru Buria,Sabur Buria and Soben Buria. They have been charged under various sections of the Indian Penal Code for assaulting public servant during duty, simple hurt, grievous hurt and resistance to lawful apprehension.”
