The Thane police team, probing the murder of a young couple in Thane on Thursday, have reached the hometown of the deceased in Uttar Pradesh. With no leads so far, the police believe that the statements of the families would be critical to the case.
A couple was found murdered in their home in Thane on Thursday after neighbours complained to the police about a foul smell. The deceased have been identified as Vijay Shankar Yadav (30), and Priya Yadav (22) who was pregnant. Both natives of Unnao, Uttar Pradesh, they had got married in April last year and moved to Thane six months ago.
A senior police officer said, “Honour killing is the hypothesis in the case. However, we have not got any evidence to back it yet.”
The police said that it was an inter-faith marriage, and the woman, who was originally known as Sufia Mansuri, converted after marriage.
The woman was nine months pregnant and due to deliver around September 26, said police.
“We have not yet recovered the murder weapon. The bodies were too decomposed for us to make out the dimensions of the weapon used. However, we suspect it was a sharp object,” said an investigator.
A postmortem was conducted by a panel of doctors on Friday. It was found that Vijay’s throat had been slit and Priya had been stabbed multiple times in the stomach, killing the couple’s unborn child.
