A 32-year-old domestic help has come under the police scanner for allegedly stealing jewellery worth Rs 31.25 lakh from the house of his employers before escaping. The incident took place at the Juhu residence of financial consultant Harendra Thanawala (59) on Saturday.

The Juhu police said the suspect has been identified as Suresh Parida of Orissa. Officers said Parida struck when Thanawala and his wife had gone out on Saturday morning, leaving him alone at home.

“Thanawala lives with his wife in Mittal Park on J R Mhatre Marg in Juhu. His son stays in another apartment in the same building. Parida had been employed at their residence for the past year years and the family trusted him enough to leave him alone at home,” said an officer.

The officer said when Thanawala and his wife returned four hours later,Parida was missing. They also found that jewellery had been stolen,he said.

The officer said attempts to contact Parida proved futile as he did not answer his mobile phone.

“A case was then registered. On inspecting the scene of crime,we found that of the two cupboards from which the valuables were stolen,Parida had broken the lock of one and opened the other using a duplicate key. He managed to escape with gold, diamond, pearl and silver jewellery worth around Rs 31.25 lakh,” he said.

The police have formed teams to trace Parida. A team may be dispatched to Orissa, the officer said.
