Investigations into the escape of two undertrials from the custody of the Gurgaon police on Monday has revealed that the three policemen, escorting the murder convicts, had food at a dhaba near the Saket court before shopping at a mall there. The three policemen were arrested and released on bail on Thursday.

On April 2,two undertrials,Sandeep Chitania and Neetu, who have been involved in cases of murder and attempts to murder, were brought to Delhi by three personnel,ASI Balraj and two constables, via the Metro from Bhondsi Jail in Haryana.

“They left at 7 am and reached the Saket court at 10 am. However, the hearing was postponed to 2 pm. The undertrials then requested the personnel that they be allowed to eat since it was past lunch time,” said a police officer.

“The personnel took them to a dhaba near the court complex. They told the personnel that the cases against them were nearing conclusion and that they wanted to lead normal lives and, hence, had no intentions of running away since that would lead to another case being lodged against them. The personnel unlocked their handcuffs so that they could eat properly,” said the officer.

Thereafter, the undertrials told the personnel that they wished to buy themselves some clothes, police said. “They took them shopping to MGF mall in Saket,” said the officer.

“Once done with the shopping, the two undertrials told the personnel that a few of their friends were waiting outside the mall in a Bolero and that would give them all a ride back to Gurgaon. They told the personnel that it would be difficult for them to travel by the Metro again and had the option of travelling in air-conditioned comfort,” he said.

“Once inside, instead of taking the NH 8,the Bolero took a different route and reached Dwarka Sector 19,just 50 metres from the Additional Commissioner’s office. There,Sandeep said he wanted to relieve himself. The constable in charge of him unlocked his handcuffs and allowed him to get out. Immediately,Neetu took the constable’s pistol and put it to his head. ASI Balraj then took out his pistol and put it to Neetu’s head,” said the officer.

However,Neetu whipped the pistol out of the ASI’s hand and hit him with it,police said. He pushed the two constables out of the car. Immediately. Sandeep snatched the carbine of one of the constables and the undertrials along with three persons who had come in the Bolero fled with their arrest warrants.

When asked why the ASI didn’t fire at the vehicle despite having a pistol on him,he reportedly told police that he was too scared to do so.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (West) who is also DCP (Headquarters),Abhay Rao said,“We are waiting for a report from the Delhi Police who are investigating the matter. Depending on the report,we will take action.”
