The Borivali Government Railway Police (GRP),which is investigating an acid attack on a 22-year-old woman, have learnt that the suspect has a criminal record and was externed from Malwani.

On Tuesday,Aarti Thakur was returning home when 24-year-old Nasir Shaikh alias Pintu threw acid on her face and neck at Goregaon railway station. Thakur is currently recuperating at a Goregaon hospital.

The police arrested Pintu based on the statement of the victim and CCTV recording.

“We learnt that Pintu had a criminal background and was externed from Malwani after being arrested,” said a police officer from Borivali GRP,who did not wish to be named. Sheikh works as an extra in films and is also into the catering business. According to the GRP,though he has been booked for the attack,he has not yet confessed to the crime.

“We are now trying to find out whether two previous attacks on the woman were also done by Pintu,” said P M Karyakarte, senior inspector of Borivali GRP.

“The victim has told us that Pintu did not approve of her friendship with his sister, and that he attacked her to separate them. However,we are verifying the statement and also finding out whether there was any other motive behind the attack,” said Karyakarte.
