A day after the Shiv Sena led Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) proposed to hike water tariff in the city,Congress leaders have called for an agitation to oppose the increase in water charges.

The BMC,in its annual budget on Tuesday, raised water charges and also made a provision to hike them annually by up to eight per cent. The BMC has proposed that societies and residential buildings pay Rs 4 per 1,000 litres from the current Rs3. 50. Industrial units will have to pay Rs 40 per 1,000 litres from Rs 25,while race courses and 3-star hotels pay Rs 60 per 1,000 litres from Rs 38.

“The proposed hike for next financial year will be a heavy burden for the poorer section of the city. Citizens should realise that electing the Shiv Sena and its ally BJP was a big mistake. This proposal will affect a large majority of the citizens including slum dwellers and even middle class,” Sachin Sawant, spokesperson of the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee said.

The proposal, which also hints at a further hike of a maximum of eight per cent is also being protested by the Congress. “If one calculates the eight per cent hike in water tax for the next five years,it will result in an increase of almost 50 per cent. How can Shiv Sena allow such a thing,” the Congress party release said.
