Ramrao Adik Institute of Technology (RAIT) in Nerul Monday suspended two students — Pradeep Paikrao and Gaurav Madhvi — for allegedly bullying classmate Nitin Padalkar, driving him to suicide last week.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the college’s Anti-ragging Committee. Nitin,19,a second year Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering student, allegedly flung himself in front of a train near Vithalwadi railway station Friday night. Police said a suicide note was found in his pocket, which named classmates Pradeep and Gaurav.

“We have initiated an inquiry. I do not think this was a case of ragging as the boys are Nitin’s classmates,” said D N Patil, principal,RAIT.

Mumbai University sent a letter to RAIT Monday, directing it to submit a report. University officials also visited the college. “The college is following rules. It has an anti-ragging squad and anti-ragging committee, which hold regular meetings,” said a university official. “Unfortunately,Nitin never complained to the university or to the college’s anti-ragging committee,” added the official.

While a complaint has been registered at Kalyan GRP,Pradeep and Gaurav have not been booked. “The college’s report is expected in a couple of days. We will then arrest them,” said S G Nirmal, senior inspector,Kalyan GRP.

Patil said Nitin was intelligent. “In the first year,he was diploma student of Electronics Engineering. After clearing all subjects in the annual exam,he asked to be shifted to the degree course in Electronics and Telecommunications Engineering,” he said.

Patil said action could have been taken had Nitin lodged a complaint. “He never once complained either to his head of department or counsellor. We have not been able to talk to other students as exam is underway, but we will call some of them later,” Patil said.
