A rent collector with the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) was arrested by the Mumbai unit of the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) on Thursday while he was accepting a bribe of Rs 25,000.
ACB officers identified the accused as Shankar Pandey.
He was arrested for demanding a bribe from a person who had approached him to ensure that a hutment from the area was demolished as it was hampering construction of a water-tank,they said.
The complainant in the case is a driver who resides in Jogeshwari. He had got a house in the tenement for himself and wanted a hutment demolished as the woman who resided there had also been allotted another accommodation. The complainant wanted to construct a water tank but could not as the womans hutment was in the way. He then approached Pandey to get it demolished as orders for the same had also been issued, said an ACB officer. The officer said the complainant alleged that Pandey demanded a bribe of Rs 50,000 from him.
He approached us and we began a probe. We told the complainant to set up a meeting with Pandey, said the officer. A meeting was set up at Pandeys office at K-West ward,Andheri,on Thursday.
As soon as he accepted the bribe,we nabbed him. He has been booked for the offence, said the officer.
