Former junior national champion Vishal Madan of Chembur Gymkhana missed a century break by just two points en route to an impressive 3-0 win,in the Matunga Gymkhana-Pidilite Billiards Tournament,that got under way on Tuesday.
Madan got off to an explosive start and kicked off an opening day of significant breaks. Playing Avneet Sharma of Indore in Group H,Madan began with a break of 65 in the first frame of the best-of-five 100-up contest. He followed it with the 98 in the second that ended prematurely when he tried a narrow red in the centre and missed,after playing a cannon and going out of position. It was a rewarding day for Bombay Gymkhana cueists,as former world no 7 Nalin Patel eased to a 3-0 win over Prashant Mhatre of Shivaji Park Gymkhana,while Aditya Agrawal beat Nikhil Ghadge of Matunga Gymkhana 3-1 with breaks of 51 and 53 in Group E encounters. The other significant winners were,Hitesh Kotwani of CCI in Group D and Mahesh Jagdale of Elphinstone Cricket Club in Group H. Thirty-two players feature in eight groups of four players each in the 100-up best-of-five frames round robin. The top two players from each group will qualify for the 150-up best-of-five knock out pre-quarter-finals. The quarter-finals and semi-finals will be played over best-of-seven frames,while the final will be a best-of-nine frames contest.
