Mumbai left-arm spinner Ankeet Chavan snared five wickets as he helped Air India restrict newly promoted Jain Irrigation to 214 on the first day of the Times Shield Division A cricket tournament’s second round clash at the MIG Ground,Bandra on Tuesday.

That is after a 90-run partnership for the sixth wicket between Amit Patil and Raju Mehara had propped up the Jain Irrigation innings. Patil was the top-scorer contributing 83 off 123 balls,a knock that included 12 fours and a six. The rest of the Jain batsmen though seemed to have little clue against Chavan’s wiles and the rest of his incessant tricks as they folded meekly with the seasoned operator finishing with figures of 5/76 while Air India started off their response strongly, finishing on 91 without loss with wicket-keeper batsmen Sushant Marathe and Naman Ojha (batting on 53) having gotten off to positive starts. Ojha in particular has already revealed his plans for Day Two having smashed three sixes and five fours in his half-century.

Meanwhile,DY Patil B rode on Nikhil Mandle’s unbeaten 83 to finish strongly on 332 for 8 against Tata Sports at Nerul on the opening day of their clash. Yogesh Pawar (48),Nilkanth Parab (40),M R Srinivas (35) and Survesh Damle (49) also played their parts with crucial contributions and also providing support to Mandle. Veteran off-spinner Ramesh Powar and left-arm spinner Vishal Dabholkar did end up three wickets each for Tata Sports but overall weren’t able to keep the home team batsmen on a tight leash for too long.

At the Western Railway ground in Mahalaxmi,D Y Patil A were bowled out for 215 against Western Railway B thanks to some consistent bowling from the hosts led by left-arm pacer Hardik Rathod’s 3/50. Swapnil Asnodkar was the top-scorer with 85 for DY Patil, for which he faced 141 balls with 12 hits to the ropes. Iqbal Abdulla also swung his bat around for his 39. At stumps,Western Railway had gotten off to a solid start and with Abhishek Kaushik batting on 39,had reached 50 for no loss.

The match between Indian Oil and Bharat Petroleum didn’t take place as a result of both teams being away in Indore, participating in the All India Oil Shield Tournament.

Brief scores: DY Patil A 215 (Swapnil Asondkar 85,Iqbal Abdulla 39; Hardik Rathod 3/50) vs Western Railway B 50 for no loss (A Kaushik 39 n.o.); Jain Irrigation 214 (Amit Patil 83,Raju Mehera 34; Ankeet Chavan 5/76) vs Air India 91 for no loss (Sushant Marathe 34 n.o.,Naman Ojha 53 n.o.); DY Patil B 332 for 8 (Y Pawar 48,Nikant Parab 40,Sarvesh Damle 49,Nikhil Mandle 88 n.o.,M R Shrinivas 35; Ramesh Powar 3/100,Vishal Dabholkar 3/78) vs Tata Sports.
