Renowned photographer Jagdish Mali,59,passed away in Mumbai on Monday. The end came around 11.30 am due to multiple organ failure. The celebrated artiste and father of actor Antara Mali was admitted to Nanavati Hospital on May 1 following a hip fracture caused by a fall at his Mahim residence.

Mali started his career in the 80s and worked with actors such as Shabana Azmi,Kareena Kapoor,Anupam Kher,Om Puri and Irrfan.

However, his most memorable work was with Rekha. “What set him apart was his creativity with frames. One gets a glimpse of that in his photographs of Rekha. In each frame he has presented a unique side to the veteran actor,” said photographer Subi Samuel. Shatrughan Sinha, whose portfolio was made by Mali, was so impressed by his skills that he had him make his son Luv Sinha’s portfolio too. Designer Masaba Gupta recalled in her tweet the frames he shot of her mother and actor Neena Gupta.

Over the years,Mali’s popularity waned. But his contemporaries claim that was hardly to do with his work. “It happens with every artiste,be it an actor or a film technician. When a new generation of actors comes, they chose to work with photographers from their age-group. But that doesn’t imply that seniors’ work is not appreciated,” said actor Manoj Bajpai, whose portfolio was also made by Mali.

There have been rumours that Mali was an alcohol addict.

In January, starlet Mink Brar had claimed that she found the photographer on the streets in a dishevelled state. But Mali’s friends denied that he was an alcoholic or was facing a financial crisis.

“He used to meet me every 2-3 weeks,” said trade analyst Ashoke Pandit.

He had quit alcohol five years ago following a liver ailment. That was also the time he sold his studio. “He didn’t own property but Jagdish had been freelancing,” he said.

The funeral took place at Shivaji Park Crematorium and was attended by his daughter, her husband journalist Che Kurien, photographer Ashok Salian and other members of his fraternity.
