The CBI on Friday arrested Subhas Kamble, general manager of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL), Ratnagiri & Sindhudurg (Maharashtra), for demanding a bribe of Rs 2 lakh from a contractor. A contractor named Tanveer has also been arrested by the central agency in the case.

The CBI has registered a case under sections of Prevention of Corruption Act and section120 (B) for criminal conspiracy under IPC against the duo. “It was alleged that the GM was demanding 3% commission in bills relating to contractors. He allegedly demanded Rs 2 lakh and the private person subsequently accepted the bribe from the complainant. The GM and private person have been arrested from Ratnagiri and Goa respectively,” CBI spokesperson RK Gaur said.

“This is an unique modus operandi where in order to ensure that no money trail is left behind, the victim was asked to deposit the bribe in a third party’s account,” Gaur added. Searches were conducted at the premises of the accused in Ratnagiri, Sangli and Goa. CBI sleuths have recovered documents pertaining to immovable and movable properties, a locker key and several ATM cards and jewellery during the searches. Both the arrested accused were produced on Friday before a court at Ratnagiri. The court has remanded the accused in police custody till March 29.
