A 37-year-old woman was injured after a Hyundai i10 hit her Maruti Swift Dzire near Taraporewala Aquarium on Marine Drive at about 2.15 pm on Monday. The i10 had been rammed by a school bus.

The bus driver has been arrested under Indian Penal Code sections 279 (rash and negligent driving) and 337 (causing hurt by negligence). He told the police his brakes failed.

Marine Drive police said Jigna Shah had hired the Maruti Swift Dzire tourist vehicle to travel from Andheri (East) to Ballard Pier, where she had to attend a meeting.

“At about 2:15 pm,the bus of Alexandra Girls English Institution driven by Ajinkya Uttekar (27) rammed the Hyundai i10 at the signal. The i10 then hit the Dzire, which in turn hit another stationary vehicle,” a police officer said.

There were no schoolchildren on the bus at the time as the driver was returning after having dropping off all students, said the police.

Witnesses rushed Shah to Bombay Hospital, where doctors said her condition was stable.

“We immediately informed the police of the accident and also ensured that Shah was taken to hospital,” said Vikas Patil,an eyewitness.

“Uttekar said he applied the brakes at the signal, but the bus did not stop. We have asked the regional transport office to inspect the vehicle to ascertain if the accident was a result of a mechanical failure,” said the officer.
