Rajaram Manjhaokar (62),a builder involved in slum rehabilitation authority (SRA) projects, was shot at in Borivali Tuesday morning.

Manjhaokar, who has been in the construction business for the past 15 years, had left home in Devipada Colony near Sanjay Gandhi National Park for office around 11 am when two unidentified men who were on a sidewalk, approached his black Skoda from the front and opened fire from .765 bore star pistols, police said.

The builder and his driver Dinesh Mandaokar (24),however,escaped unhurt.

Manjhaokar told Kasturba Marg Police he was developing two SRA projects in Devipada, one of which was disputed.

Police said the builder’s car was still in first gear when the attack happened. A bullet hit the front door of the car, narrowly missing the driver, while another whizzed past the rear door, missing Manjhaokar. A third bullet hit the rear windshield as the car gained speed.

“The men fled before Manjhaokar could raise an alarm,” said Sunil Deshmukh,ACP(Kasturba Marg division).

Manjhaokar told police he had received four threat calls from an unidentified number between May 13 and May 20. He said the caller told him to maintain “proper relations” with him.

Deshmukh said,“He (the builder) did write an application but it was vague with no details of the call or its content.”

A police officer who did the panchnama said the manner of the attack indicated the intention was not to kill.

Police, however, are also probing if the attack was staged. They have registered a case of attempt to murder and extortion.

“We found three bullet shells and a live cartridge at the spot,” Deshmukh said.

Manjhaokar said he had a dispute with four other builders regarding an SRA project. He suspects involvement of local goon Parshuram Nalawade,a murder accused out on parole for the past two months.

“Manjhaokar suspects Nalawade could have fired at his car. We have detained Nalawade,” said a police officer.

Nalawade was arrested late night. He allegedly told police there were four attackers, including him.
