MODIFYING THEIR approach, ward-level officials of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) will now initiate legal action against food stalls that cook or prepare food in the open if these return after being removed from pavements.

Tired of confiscating and then returning hawkers’ wares after levying fines over and over again, the BMC had similarly begun crushing seized wares last month as a more permanent solution.

In a meeting held on March 5, Municipal Commissioner Ajoy Mehta has instructed all 24 assistant commissioners to shut down open sale of food items as well as drinks, contamination of which causes gastrointestinal diseases.
