Matunga police Monday received an FIR registered at Yeshwantpur police station in Bangalore regarding theft of photographic equipment worth Rs 45,000 committed by a man they arrested recently.
Pradip Ghosh allegedly confessed to have committed crimes in Bangalore,Delhi and Mumbai to fund his drug habit. He was arrested for the first time in Kolkata in 2009,police said.
Ghosh, was arrested in Kolkata by a Mumbai Police team for allegedly stealing equipment worth nearly Rs 4 lakh from three photographers in Mumbai over the past eight months. Police said he would lure his victims to restaurants by claiming to give them an assignment, spike their drinks and flee with their equipment.
He never revealed his real name to victims, said senior inspector Raghavendra Thakur.
On May 22,Ghosh met 22-year-old Gowri Shankar at a lodge in Model Colony,Yeshwantpur, and introduced himself as Manish. Police said Ghosh incapacitated Shankar by spiking his drink and fled with a Canon camera and memory cards.
Shankar spent two days in hospital and later registered a complaint at Yeshwantpur police station on May 25. Ghosh used a strong dose of a substance that would ensure that his victims were sick for at least two days, giving him enough time to escape, Thakur said.
Police had a hard time tracking him as he would constantly be on the move and change SIM cards every time he travelled to a different state. Ghosh, however, has a large, distinctive lump on the back of the head. Police said all three of his victims had noticed it and he was traced after a deaf boy in Kolkata led police to Ghosh’s home after identifying him by the lump.
