Led by Avantika Chavan and Jason Smith,Khar Gymkhana once again emerged on top with 22 gold medals on the final day of the GMAAA Age Group swimming championships at the Tata Swimming Pool,Chembur,on Monday. Avantika and Jason won five medals each.
Khar Gymkhana was followed by Otters Club in the final standings, who ended with 19 golds as this selection meet saw a total of 28 new records established. The first two days saw a close tussle between Khar Gymkhana and Otters Club. However,Avantika struck sensational form on the last day as she set three more records to the two she had already set on the previous day. That combined with Jason’s five gold medals meant that Khar Gymkhana came out on top by the end of the meet. The most thrilling event of the day,the 100m girls under 17 freestyle, saw a neck-to-neck battle between Avantika and her Khar Gymkhana teammate Rujuta Bhatt. Avantika eventually pipped her by 0:01.66 secs as she bettered Rujuta’s last year timing of 01:05.68. Incidentally, even Rujuta improved her old timing as she clocked 1:05.23 secs. Following them at third was Trisha Bhimani, who too got her name in the record book as she timed 01:05.28 secs.
