The Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS) on Friday arrested two historysheeters,who were allegedly on their way to carry out an illegal sale of weapons,and booked them under various sections of the Arms Act and other relevant acts.
The two accused,Vinod Mehrol (42) and Manoj Mehrol (37),are brothers and were arrested as they were attempting to enter the city from Mulund checkpost. Officers from the ATS Vikhroli unit found two imported pistols,one revolver,one locally made hand gun,four .315 rifles and 10 live cartridges from the duo.
According to a press statement from the ATS,Vinod has at least five cases registered against him for similar offences at Crime Branch units at Antop Hill,and Thane. Manoj has similar offences registered in Thane units of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and police stations.
The press statement adds that the duo are known to have a history of illegal trade in weapons in urban centres like Mumbai.
The Vikhroli unit is now probing the scope of the racket and the duos regular client network. The accused are believed to have an illegal network of sourcing weapons that extends till New Delhi,officers said.
