The Maharashtra Legislative Assembly and Council on Tuesday paid tribute to former president A P J Abdul Kalam and Dalit leader R S Gavai. While Kalam breathed his last in Shillong on Monday, Gavai had passed away last Saturday. A condolence motion was moved in both the houses by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. As a mark of respect to Kalam, assembly and council were adjourned for the day after offering tribute.
Fadnavis said, “The greatness of Dr APJ Abdul Kalam was in his simplicity. It was his constant striving to share the achievements with the most ordinary keeping in mind a single mission to take the country to great heights. Not surprisingly, the former president was among the first to realise the power of our demographic dividend and the opportunities created by it.”
Fadnavis said, “Whether it was scientific research or agriculture, Kalam had extensively reflected on the issues for the larger welfare of the country.”
Fadnavis described Gavai as a “father figure” who always worked for the uplift of the downtrodden.
