Like all suburbs in a city,Thane too has been attempting to develop a vibrant art scene. In contrast to what one sees in south Mumbai, the art events in Thane have been on a smaller scale and isolated, focusing on just one art form, such as painting exhibitions or musical programmes. Being singular events, the residents would hardly get a chance to explore multiple facets of art unless they travelled all the way to south Mumbai for events. “Several art lovers of Thane felt this vacuum,” says the website of Upvan Art Festival,Thane’s first large-scale multi-arts festival, which will be held from January 10 to 12. The event will be held at the scenic Upvan lake, situated on the foot hills of Yeoor. “It will be spread over 15 acres of area surrounding the lake, with about 300 stalls and specially-designed stages for performances,” says Shailendra Ingle, one of the coordinators of the festival, which will bring together over 200 artistes, both Indian and international.

Programmes includes visual arts, music and dance performances including artistes such as Zakir Hussain,L Subramaniam and Rashid Khan, among others. There will also be talks and discussions by artists such as Akbar Padamsee and Sudhir Patwardhan. The festival will be an annual event.
